US Construction Spending Unexpectedly Falls
Construction spending in the US decreased 0.8 percent from a month earlier at a seasonally adjusted USD 1.29 trillion in October 2019, following a revised 0.3 percent drop in the previous month and against market expectations of a 0.4 percent rise. It was the second straight monthly decline in construction spending and the sharpest since June. Investment in private construction slumped 1.0 percent in October, after a 1.1 percent fall in September; while spending on public construction edged down 0.2 percent, reversing from a 1.9 percent gain.

US Construction Spending Above Forecasts
Construction spending in the US increased 0.5 percent from a month earlier at a seasonally adjusted USD 1.29 trillion in September 2019, after a revised 0.3 percent fall in the previous month and beating market expectations of a 0.2 percent rise. Spending on public construction advanced 1.5 percent, rebounding from a 0.4 percent fall in August, as spending on state and local government construction projects climbed 1.6 percent. Also, investment in private construction increased 0.2 percent, up from a 0.3 percent drop. Year-on-year, construction spending slumped 2 percent.

US Construction Spending Below Forecasts
Construction spending in the US increased 0.1 percent from a month earlier at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of USD 1.29 trillion in August of 2019, after showing no growth in the previous month and well below market expectations of a 0.4 percent gain. Spending on public construction advanced 0.4 percent, easing from a 1.4 percent jump in July. Investment in private construction was flat, after a 0.5 percent fall in the prior month, as a 0.9 percent increase in private residential investment, the highest since November 2018, was offset by a second straight monthly decline in outlays on nonresidential projects (-1 percent from -1.6 percent). Year-on-year, construction spending slumped 1.9 percent.

US Construction Spending Rises Less than Expected
US construction spending increased 0.1 percent from a month earlier at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of USD 1.29 trillion in July of 2019, recovering from a downwardly revised 0.7 percent fall in the previous month and missing market expectations of a 0.3 percent gain. Investment in public construction rose 0.4 percent, after a 3.1 percent slump in June, as spending on state and local government construction projects rebounded 0.6 percent. Meantime, spending on private construction decreased 0.1 percent, down from a 0.1 percent gain.

US Construction Spending Drops the Most in 7 Months
US construction spending fell 1.3 percent from a month earlier at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of USD 1.29 trillion in June of 2019, following a downwardly revised 0.5 percent decline in the previous month and against market expectations of a 0.5 percent rise. It was the largest drop since November last year. Spending on private construction tumbled 0.4 percent to a more than 1-1/2-year low, after a 0.3 percent decrease in May, mainly due to a 0.5 percent fall in residential projects. Also, investment in public construction slumped 3.7 percent, the largest drop since March of 2002, after decreasing 1.2 percent in May, as spending on state and local government construction projects fell 4.1 percent, also the biggest decline since March 2002.

US Construction Spending Unexpectedly Falls in May
US construction spending fell 0.8 percent from a month earlier at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of USD 1.29 trillion in May 2019, after an upwardly revised 0.4 percent rise in the previous month and below market expectations of a 0.1 percent gain. It was the largest decline since November last year, as spending on private construction dropped 0.7 percent, after declining 1 percent in April, as investment in private residential projects fell for the fifth consecutive month to its weakest since December 2016 (-0.6 percent, the same as in April) and nonresidential structures (-0.9 percent vs -1.4 percent). Also, investment in public construction decreased 0.9 percent, after rising 4.5 percent in the prior month, of which state and local government construction projects (-0.6 percent vs 4.3 percent) and federal government projects (-5.2 percent vs 7.3 percent).
