South Africa Producer Inflation at 4-1/2-Year Low
Producer prices in South Africa rose 3 percent year-on-year in October 2019, slowing from a 4.1 percent gain in the previous month and below market expectations of a 3.1 percent increase. It was the lowest producer inflation rate since April 2015, as cost of coke, petroleum, chemical, rubber & plastic products dropped (-0.4 percent vs 2.8 percent in September), in particular petrol (-6.5 percent vs -0.6 percent). Also, prices eased for food, beverages & tobacco (3.8 percent vs 4 percent); paper & printed products (5.8 percent vs 8 percent); and electrical machinery, communication & metering equipment (2.5 percent vs 2.8 percent). Meanwhile, cost advanced further for transport equipment (3.7 percent vs 3 percent) and non-metallic-mineral products (8.6 percent vs 8 percent). On a monthly basis, producer prices went up 0.3 percent, after a 0.2 percent gain in the prior month and below forecasts of a 0.4 percent rise.

South Africa Producer Inflation at 8-Month Low
Producer prices in South Africa increased 4.1 percent from a year ago in September 2019, following a 4.5 percent rise in August and below market expectations of a 4.3 percent gain. It was the lowest producer inflation since January, as prices continued to slow for coke, petroleum, chemical, rubber & plastic products (2.8% vs 3.3% in August), namely petrol (-0.6% vs -1.3%); transport equipment (3% vs 3.9%) and food, beverages & tobacco (4% vs 4.6%). In contrast, cost advanced faster for paper & printed products (8% vs 7.8%); non-metallic-mineral products (8% vs 7.5%) and electrical machinery, communication & metering equipment (2.8% vs 2.5%). On a monthly basis, producer prices went up 0.2 percent, after increasing 0.3 percent in the prior month and against market expectations of a 0.4 percent rise.

Producer prices in South Africa increased 4.5 percent from a year ago in August 2019, easing further from a 4.9 percent rise in July and below market expectations of a 5.4 percent gain. This was the lowest producer inflation since January, amid slowing prices of coke, petroleum, chemical, rubber & plastic products (3.3% vs 4% in July), due to diesel (-1.1% vs -0.4%) and petrol (-1.3% vs -2.0%); transport equipment (3.9% vs 4.3%); food, beverages & tobacco (4.6% vs 5.1%) and paper and printed products (7.8% vs 8.4%). In contrast, cost rose further for textiles, clothing & footwear (4% vs 3.9%); non-metallic-mineral products (7.5% vs 6.9%); and electrical machinery, communication & metering equipment (2.5% vs 1.9%). On a monthly basis, producer prices went up 0.3 percent, after decreasing 0.2 percent in the prior month and slightly above market expectations of a 0.2 percent rise.

South Africa Producer Inflation Hits 5-Month Low
Producer prices in South Africa increased 4.9 percent from a year earlier in July, easing markedly from a 5.8 percent rise in June and below market expectations of a 5.4 percent gain. That was the lowest producer inflation since February, mainly due to coke, petroleum, chemical, rubber & plastic products (4.0% vs 8.3% in June), on lower fuel prices. Cost also slowed for textiles, clothing & footwear (3.9% vs 4.6%) and transport equipment (4.3% vs 5.1%). In contrast, prices rose faster for food, beverages & tobacco (5.1% vs 4.8%); paper & printed products (8.4% vs 7.3%); non-metallic-mineral products (6.9% vs 6.2%); electrical machinery, communication & metering equipment (1.9% vs 0.9%) and furniture (5.9% vs 5.8%). On a monthly basis, producer prices dropped 0.2 percent, after increasing 0.4 percent in the prior month and against market estimates of a 0.2 percent gain.

South Africa June Producer Inflation Rate Slows to 5.8%
Producer prices in South Africa increased 5.8 percent year-on-year in June, easing from a 6.4 percent gain in May and matching market expectations. Cost slowed for coke, petroleum, chemical, rubber & plastic products (8.3 percent vs 10.7 percent in May); metals, machinery & computer equipment (5.4 percent vs 5.7 percent); transport equipment (5.1 percent vs 6.5 percent); electrical machinery & communication (0.9 percent vs 1.7 percent); and non-metallic mineral products (6.2 percent vs 6.8 percent). Meanwhile, prices advanced further for food, beverages & tobacco (4.8 percent vs 4.5 percent); textiles, clothing & footwear (4.6 percent vs 4.2 percent); and furnishings (5.8 percent vs 4.7 percent). Also, inflation was steady for paper & printed products (at 7.3 percent). On a monthly basis, producer prices rose 0.4 percent, after a 0.5 percent increase in the prior month and in line with market consensus.

South Africa Producer Inflation Edges Down to 6.4%
Producer prices in South Africa increased 6.4 percent year-on-year in May 2019, compared to a 6.5 percent rise in the prior month and market expectations of a 6.3 percent gain. Prices slowed for coke, petroleum, chemical, rubber & plastic products (10.7% vs 11.7% in April); metals, machinery & computer equipment (5.7% vs 6%) and paper & printed products (7.3% vs 7.5%). Meantime, cost advanced at the same pace for food, beverages & tobacco (4.5%) and textiles, clothing & footwear (4.2%). In contrast, prices rose faster for transport equipment (6.5% vs 6.3%); non-metallic mineral products (6.8% vs 4.4%); electrical machinery & communication (1.7% vs 1.4%) and furnishings (4.7% vs 3.1%). On a monthly basis, producer prices went up 0.5 percent, easing from a 1.3 percent rise in April and matching market consensus, mainly led by coke, petroleum, chemical, rubber & plastic products (1.3% vs 3.7%).
