Burundi Inflation Rate at Near 2-Year High of 4%
The annual inflation rate in Burundi rose to 4 percent in October 2019 from 2 percent in the previous month. It was the highest inflation rate since January last year, mainly driven by food & non-alcoholic beverages (6.2 percent vs 2.9 percent in September), of which fish & seafood (32.5 percent), meat (13.5 percent) and bread & cereals (12 percent). Additional upward pressure came from prices of recreation & culture (12.5 percent vs 12.3 percent); housing & utilities (2.5 percent vs 1.5 percent); clothing & footwear (3.8 percent vs 1.7 percent); restaurants & hotels (0.4 percent vs -1.1 percent) and miscellaneous goods & services (2.9 percent vs 0.9 percent). In contrast, cost fell for transport (-1.9 percent vs 0.2 percent) and alcoholic beverages & tobacco (-2.3 percent vs -0.9 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.6 percent, after rising 0.9 percent in the previous month.

Burundi Inflation Rate at 2% in September
Consumer prices in Burundi rose 2.0 percent year-on-year in September 2019, following a 0.6 percent decline in the previous month. It was the first increase in consumer prices after nineteen months of deflation, mainly driven by prices of recreation & culture (12.3% vs 8.3% in August); housing & utilities (1.5% vs 0.8%) and food & non-alcoholic beverages (2.9% vs -2.9%). Conversely, inflation slowed for transport (0.2% vs 2.0 %); furnishings (2.8% vs 4.3%); clothing & footwear (1.7% vs 4.0%); health (2.2% vs 3.2%); education (1.8% vs 2.1%) and miscellaneous goods & services (0.9% vs 2.1%). In addition, cost fell for alcoholic beverages & tobacco (-0.9% vs -0.7%); restaurants & hotels (-1.1% vs -2.5%) and communications (-0.4% vs 0.4%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices inched up 0.9 percent, after increasing 0.8 percent in the previous month.

Burundi Consumer Prices Fall the Least in Over a Year
Consumer prices in Burundi dropped 0.6 percent year-on-year in August 2019, following a 2.6 percent decline in the previous month. It was the nineteenth month of deflation, though at the softest pace since June 2018. Prices decreased less for food & non-alcoholic beverages (-2.9 percent vs -6.2 percent in July), namely due to vegetables (-8.2 percent vs -11.8 percent); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (-0.7 percent vs -2.5 percent) and restaurants & hotels (-2.5 percent vs -2.6 percent). Moreover, cost went up faster for clothing & footwear (4.0 percent vs 2.1 percent); furnishings (4.3 percent vs 3.5 percent); health (3.2 percent vs 1.9 percent); transport (2.0 percent vs 1.8 percent); recreation & culture (8.3 percent vs 3.8 percent) and miscellaneous goods & services (2.1 percent vs 1.7 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.8 percent, after a 0.6 percent increase in the previous month.

Burundi Consumer Prices Fall 4% YoY in June
Consumer prices in Burundi fell 4 percent year-on-year in June 2019, following a 2.4 percent decline in May. It was the seventeenth month of deflation, as cost of transport dropped (-0.4 percent vs 1.2 percent in May) and prices decreased further for food & non-alcoholic beverages (-8.5 percent vs -5.7 percent in May); and restaurants & hotels (-2 percent vs -1.5 percent). Also, cost eased for miscellaneous goods & services (2.6 percent vs 3.2 percent); furnishings & household equipment (2.4 percent vs 3.9 percent); health (1.5 percent vs 2.8 percent); education (2 percent vs 2.1 percent); and communications (0.4 percent vs 0.6 percent). Meanwhile, prices rose at a faster pace for housing & utilities (0.8 percent vs 0.1 percent); clothing & footwear (3.4 percent vs 2.4 percent); and recreation & culture (4.6 percent vs 4.2 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went down 2.6 percent, after increasing 0.4 percent in the prior month.

Consumer prices in Burundi decreased 2.4% year-on-year in May 2019, following a 2.2% fall in the prior month. Is is the sixteenth month of deflation, as prices went down for food & non-alcoholic beverages (-5.7% vs -6% in April), of which bread & cereals (-5.6% vs -4%); fish & seafood (-6.2% vs -9.9%) and vegetables (-9.4% vs -10.1%; alcoholic beverages & tobacco (-1.6% vs -1.5%) and restaurants & hotels (-1.5% vs 0.2%). In addition, cost slowed for housing & utilities (0.1% vs 4.2%) and clothing & footwear (2.4% vs 3%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.4 percent, after rising 1.5 percent in the previous month.

Burundi Consumer Prices Fall the Least in 8 Months
Consumer prices in Burundi decreased 2.2% year-on-year in April 2019, following a 2.9% fall in the prior month. It is the smallest annual decline in consumer prices since last August, as cost fell less for food & non-alcoholic beverages (-6% vs -7.7%), of which vegetables (-10.1% vs -12.5%) and bread & cereals (-4% vs -11.3%). In addition, prices rose faster for housing & utilities (4.2% vs 3.1%) and miscellaneous goods & services (3.2% vs 3%). Meanwhile, inflation slowed for transport (1.1% vs 2.3%); clothing & footwear (3% vs 4.3%) and recreation & culture (3.1% vs 3.6%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices inched up 1.5 percent, after increasing 0.7 percent in the previous month.
